Windows 98 Computer Startup??

With a computer old enough to have Windows 98, it could be any number of issues.

The operating system files could have become corrupted or fragmented. If you have a Windows 98 CD, you can try reinstalling it.

On some of the older computers, especially Socket 7 desktops, the heatsink wasn't very securely fastened to the CPU. Makes sure that the heatsink is firmly attached; otherwise it may overheat and lock up.

The hard drive could be physically damaged and have trouble when trying to read data.

Hit F8 repeatedly when the black screen comes up (BIOS screen). A menu will show up. Choose safe mode and see if it comes up. Try and reboot into normal mode at that point. If it still hangs, you have a startup issue like a driver or bad program. That is where a consultant is most likely going to have to come into the picture....
