I would say the hp because the UMA graphics on the Asus are not good for gaming.

The second is only a $400 laptop. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

Asus is a better brand than HP.

The first looks like about $500

Here are two $600 systems: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

lenovo G780 Metal (59363225) Notebook Intel Core i5 3230M(2.60GHz) 17.3" 6GB Memory DDR3 1600 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

Acer Aspire V3-571G-6622 Notebook Intel Core i5 3230M(2.60GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M

In gaming, the graphics is very important, and the A8-4500M with HD 7640G should do a little better than the HD 4000 of the core i5 IC

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

But the core i5 in every other task, is much stronger by about 50%.

How much do you have available and you really can use a discrete graphics card.
