What is the best FREE operating system?

Postby wilf » Fri Feb 01, 2013 7:04 pm

I've bought a new custom built PC but I'm a tad skint now and cannot afford Windows 7. I need some good alternatives until I have some money again so what Operating System would you say is the best? (I want it to be able to run Steam)

CONTRARY to the other replies... Ubuntu DOES now offer steam support... and it is getting better every day. Ubuntu Linux is one of the easiest to start with an others include Mint, Pinguy, Zorin... the list goes on. http://www.distrowatch.com has a complete listing of the top 100 Linnux distros for your review or download.

If you want to run Steam or pretty much any other game, then you need a Windows install.

That aside, the best free OS is probably Ubuntu or Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu). Check them out, you never know.
I've used them both, and they're great for work - word processing, spreadsheets, etc. - they're pretty, run well and fast, good web browsing, excellent protection from viruses, BUT, they will not run games.

Aimed toward the guy below - I didn't know Ubuntu supported Steam these days! How interesting... I've not used it for a couple of years now. How is support for the games though? The concern for me (and the asker here, I imagine), is if it can match the games library and what not that Windows currently has.

(Just in case, Max is a knob).

If you delete system 32, Windows 7 downloads automatically
