Basically you need motherboard, data storage device (Hard Drive) memory and, keyboard and mouse. But that description is very simplified, because modern mother board has many controllers build in. In many instances almost everything with the exception of the hard drive is on the mother board. But if you separate hem in to single item your list will be long. I will mention just the major components. Mother board will have built in BIOS (Basic Input Output System) this is a specially programmed memory chip that will recognize basic components of your machine and allow computer to come alive. You will have RAM (Random Access Memory) this allows operating system to be loaded in the computer, Drive controllers (to control your hard disk , floppy disk, CD ROM etc.) Graphic card to drive your monitor, sound card to decode voice, port controllers to control USB, LPT, Serial ports, to connect to the internet you need modem, if your computer is on the network you will have NIC (Network interface Card) the brain of it all is of curs the processor, which performs all the necessary calculations, so programs and components can "talk" to each other and the user gets the end result. This description is very simplified. Modern PC may have many other devices built in to support ever grown field of our life.

Well it depends on whether you mean Desktop or Notebook.

For a Desktop the primary components are:

Power Suppy

Processor Fan

There can be additional adapter cards such as Video, Network, Modem, Sound, Bus Controllers. Some Mainboards encorporate these. In that case they are stated as being "onboard".

The secondary components are storage drives such as a Hard Disk Drive, Optical Drive, and Floppy Disk Drive.

The tertiary devices that may mount into the 5 1/4" bay. Some audio adapters include an external device control module such as an equilizer.

External components would be a keyboard, mouse, and display
