How To Choose The Correct Speakers To Match An A/v Reciver?

Postby Deryck » Tue Sep 19, 2017 9:10 pm

I'm looking to upgrade my home theater system. I'm just wondering if this combination is correct:

RECEIVER:

Yamaha RX-V671

Amplifier Section Channel 7.1

Rated Output Power (1kHz, 1ch driven) 125W (8ohms, 0.9% THD)

Rated Output Power (1kHz, 2ch driven) 105W (8ohms, 0.9% THD)

Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven) 90W (8ohms, 0.09% THD)

Dynamic Power per Channel (8/6/4/2 ohms) 130/170/200/240W

with the following speakers:

Polk Audio RC85i 2-Way

Frequency Response Curve: 30 Hz - 20 kHz

Audio Sensitivity: 90 dB

Impdedance: 8 ohm

Peak Power Handling - Speakers: 50 watts

RMS Power Range - Amplifiers: 50

Thank You!

How To Choose The Correct Speakers To Match An A/v Reciver?

Ok - the idea of matching speakers with amp is a 1970's concept and a bit of an audio myth.

In truth - almost all name-brand speakers will work great with all the mid-range, name brand receivers.

Now - that receiver is fine. But those Polk speakers are in wall, but you really need a subwoofer to handle the low-end.

And you destroy speakers by under-powering them rather than over-powering them so that receiver is fine.

It could work. One reviewer of the speakers on Amaz*n suggested using a receiver where you can send most of the low frequency sound to the subwoofer, and that would reduce these Polks somehwat muddiness in that range.

Now, the real question is, do you need to use in-wall speakers, and, if so, do you need to use so small ones ? I use similar bookshelf speakers in my bedroom, but that system is a more basic 5.1 set. I'd never use so small a speaker for the fronts of a major 7.1 system.
