Can Anybody Tell Me The Difference Between An Lcd And Led Tv?

Postby Koltin » Sun Sep 17, 2017 12:36 pm

Hello Go White Sox! LG WRman Sherlock here!

Okay, there seems to be a misunderstanding here.
Allow me to begin unraveling it with an analogy: all cats are animals, but not all animals are cats.
Similarly, all LED TVs are LCD TVs, but not all LCD TVs are LED TVs.
Perhaps this made it a bit more confusing, but allow me to explain myself.
When someone talks about an LED TV, they actually mean an LCD TV with LEDs as a back light source.
When someone talks about an LCD TV, they actually mean an LCD TV with CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent light) as a back light source.
Essentially, an LED TV is technically an LED LCD TV, and an LCD TV is a CCFL LCD TV.
Makes more sense, right?

LED LCD TVs are much, much better than CCFL LCD TVs in many ways:

1. LEDs are much more energy efficient than CCFLs, so an LED LCD TV will consume much less energy.

2. LEDs are much smaller than CCFLs, so the TVs can be made much, much slimmer (and thus nicer to look at).

3. LEDs are much brighter than CCFLs, so the picture quality of an LED LCD TV is generally much better than a CCFL LCD TV.
Brighter back lights mean a brighter and clearer picture.

I hope this dispels any further confusion about "LED TV" vs. "LCD TV"!

LG WRman Sherlock, out!

LCD is liquid crystal display whereas LED is light emitting diode. LEDS have a crisper and brighter picture. However they do sometimes have a motion blur but it mostly depends on the brand. Led TVs are skinnier, lighter and more energy efficient.

Just bought a TV from bestbuy and was wondering the same thing.
We talked to some of the workers about it and basically LED is a little better picture quality than LCD.
Only difference really.
The trouble is that between different TV companies (samsung, toshiba, westinghouse, panasonic, etc.), one's LCD can be better than another's LED.
You just have to test out the TV you like best, but its just picture quality.

LCD is lit by a tube light in the rear and LED is lit with light emitting diodes as the name suggests.
